Miss Elko County Scholarship Pageant

Six young women will compete for the titles of Miss Elko County 2000 and Miss Northeast Nevada 2000 during the 48th annual Miss Elko County Scholarship Pageant being held at 6 p.m. March 12 at the Elko Convention Center Auditorium.

Each winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship and the chance to compete for more scholarship money at the Miss Nevada Competition in June. Scholarships will also be awarded to the first runner-up and the community service award winner.

Tickets for the performance are $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and children under 12. Tickets may be purchased at the door, from the contestants or at the Elko Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s contestants are Nicole Crawford, Lucy Griswold, Kara Nelson, Stacy Nichols, Mindy Parkkonen and Amy Peterson.

Crawford is a senior at Spring Creek High School and has been involved in color guard, band, International Club and foreign language clubs. She plans to pursue a career as a 3-D animation video programmer and designer. Crawford is the daughter of Ray Cardona and Robin Crawford of Spring Creek.

Griswold is currently attending Boise State University earning a degree in psychology. She is a member of the National Honor Society and participated in Honor Choir and All-State Choir while attending Elko High School. Griswold is the daughter of Tim and Judy Griswold of Elko.

Nelson is a senior at Spring Creek High School where she is on the Principal’s List Honor Roll and is active in student council and 4-H. She plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno and pursue a degree in orthodontics. Nelson is the daughter of Doyle Nelson and Chris Zaga of Elko.

Nichols is a senior at Spring Creek High School and is active in student council. She is a member of the national honor society and shows her school spirit through cheerleading. She plans to attend college and earn degrees in photography and special education. Nichols is the daughter of Blaine and Paula Nichols of Spring Creek.

Parkkonen is a senior at Elko High School where she is the finance editor of the yearbook and involved in cheerleading. She plans to go to college to major in education or business. Parkkonen is the daughter of Ron and Nancy Parkkonen of Elko.

Peterson is attending Utah State University where she is learning about fashion merchandising and education. She is a member of the university’s business council and ballroom dance team. Peterson also tutors children in arithmetic and reading. Peterson is the daughter of Warren and Lynnette Peterson of Spring Creek.
